USSD: Sonic’s Native, Permissionless USD Stablecoin Built With Frax
Introducing USSD, a network-integrated USD stablecoin designed to become the key source of stable liquidity across the Sonic ecosystem.
Built on Frax’s GENIUS-compatible frxUSD infrastructure, USSD combines permissionless on-chain usage with conservative, institutional-grade backing from BlackRock, Superstate, and WisdomTree. The goal is straightforward: make stable liquidity on Sonic more predictable, more composable, and easier to move across chains, so DeFi and on-chain markets can scale on a stronger foundation.
USSD is now available on Sonic with cross-chain minting capability from 10+ chains.

What Is USSD?
US Sonic Dollar is Sonic’s network-integrated USD stablecoin, built to function as a simple, dependable on-chain dollar across the ecosystem. It’s designed to behave like a stablecoin should:
- Predictable: backed 1:1 by high-quality USD assets, with a clear redemption mental model.
- Composable: a clean base token that integrates smoothly across DeFi venues (DEXs, lending, collateral, settlement) without extra assumptions.
- Easy to move: designed for flexible cross-chain minting and redemption, so liquidity can enter and exit Sonic efficiently.
- Accessible: permissionless smart-contract interaction with zero-fee minting, so anyone can mint and use USSD without gatekeeping or friction.
Why Sonic Is Launching A Native Stablecoin
Stablecoins are the “money layer” of on-chain finance. Wherever the dollar liquidity lives, that’s where trading concentrates, lending deepens, and settlement routes form.
If Sonic wants to be more than a place where apps deploy, it needs to own a reliable USD primitive that the whole network can coordinate around. A native stablecoin turns liquidity that visits the ecosystem into something that compounds within it.
That’s the philosophy behind USSD: not a new product for its own sake, but a foundational layer that makes the rest of Sonic’s financial stack feel coherent, durable, and scalable.
USSD In The Broader Vision Of Vertical Integration
Sonic’s vertical integration initiative is about ensuring the highest-value financial primitives on the network do not live as disconnected pieces that leak liquidity, incentives, and economics outward.
USSD is a core part of that strategy because stable liquidity is the base layer of nearly every on-chain financial workflow:
- Trading needs a reliable quote asset
- Lending needs stable collateral and stable borrow demand
- Perps need margin rails and settlement
- Payments need a predictable denominated value
- Protocol treasuries need a safe, composable USD base
When the main stable asset is external, liquidity fragments and incentives are harder to align. A network-native stablecoin gives Sonic one shared USD primitive across exchanges, lending markets, vaults, and settlement routes.
USSD is also foundational to Sonic’s broader vertical integration strategy. Beyond improving liquidity, it creates a path for base-layer activity and institutional yield to contribute back to the ecosystem over time, supporting buybacks and ecosystem incentives as usage grows.
Institutional-Grade Backing, Designed For Reliability
USSD is fully backed 1:1 by high-quality, short-duration USD assets held with regulated custodians, following the same reserve framework used by Frax.
Reserves include tokenized U.S. Treasury products from established institutions, including:
- BlackRock (BUIDL)
- Superstate (USTB)
- WisdomTree
- and additional top-tier providers as the reserve set expands
This structure is designed to pair two things that matter most:
- Permissionless on-chain composability (for builders and users)
- Conservative reserve quality (for predictable backing and redemption confidence)
Permissionless Minting, Zero Fees
USSD is minted through non-custodial smart contracts on Sonic.
Anyone can mint USSD by depositing supported USD assets at a 1:1 ratio, with zero minting fees. Supported assets include:
- USDC, USDT, PYUSD, USDB
- BUIDL, USTB, WTGXX (and other approved USD/Treasury representations)
Minting is also designed to be available from multiple chains. For example, a user can deposit USDC on another network and receive USSD directly on Sonic, depending on the supported routes enabled at launch.
Flexible Cross-Chain Redemption
USSD is designed to move freely and redeem cleanly.
Holders can redeem USSD 1:1 into supported USD assets on the chain of their choice. Redemption is contract-driven and designed to support:
- Cross-chain liquidity movement
- Settlement and treasury operations
- Rebalancing between ecosystems
- Liquidity migration without relying on fragmented markets
USSD is also designed to support redemption paths across CCTP-supported chains (where applicable), giving users a familiar route between USSD and widely used USD rails.
Subject to applicable KYC/AML requirements and issuer approval, eligible users will be able to redeem USSD directly for U.S. dollars in future phases.
Why Hold USSD?
USSD is Sonic’s native dollar stablecoin, and the main differentiator is that the yield from the assets backing it is designed to flow back into the network, rather than being retained entirely outside it.
This positions USSD as more than a standard stablecoin. It is designed as:
- Native dollar for payments, trading, and DeFi on Sonic
- Backed by high-quality USD assets
- Yield designed to flow back into the ecosystem
- Supports buybacks and ecosystem incentives
