The Rules of an Open Network
Permissionless, but not a Guaranteed Outcome
Sonic is a permissionless Layer 1 blockchain built for open participation. Any team is free to build on the network, compete, and pursue its own strategy. That is the nature of an open platform, and Sonic will continue to uphold that principle.
Sonic has historically supported builders across the ecosystem through targeted initiatives to help bootstrap early adoption. These efforts are intended to help strong teams to accelerate execution and establish a foundation for growth. They are not designed to insulate projects from market realities, nor do they guarantee product-market fit.
Narratives change, and it is not the foundation’s role to sustain applications that lack real demand.
Application teams remain responsible for their own products, execution, and ability to attract real users. Sonic will continue to provide robust infrastructure and ecosystem support in line with specific guidelines, but it cannot subsidize applications that fail to achieve meaningful traction. When a product does not resonate with the market, the default response should not be to attribute the outcome to the base layer. The more productive response is to reassess the product and strengthen its underlying business case.
If an application depends solely on third-party incentives for its success, it is unlikely to sustain itself, regardless of whether it is deployed on Sonic or any other chain.
Clear Business Boundaries
The principle is simple. Sonic is permissionless, and teams are free to operate their businesses as they see fit. At the same time, Sonic Labs retains the discretion to focus its cooperation and support on applications and builders who contribute a net positive impact to the network.
Open access to infrastructure does not obligate Sonic to continue supporting teams whose actions run counter to the ecosystem’s interests.
While Sonic is permissionless and open to all, Sonic Labs retains the right to focus its support on teams whose actions align with the broader interests of the ecosystem. We look forward to building with builders who share that commitment.
